The Children’s Museum of Tacoma recently co-hosted a symposium on children as citizens. Over 300 people gathered to reflect, learn, and create personal action plans in regard to our image of children and our community’s vision for the role that children can and should play in our civic discourse.
The Museum believes that seeing children as capable, competent and as contributing citizens is one of the keys to community success. It’s exciting that the Children’s Museum is becoming known for asking questions that push our thinking about life for our youngsters; it’s time to ask new and different questions.
We are the first privately-funded children’s museum in the country to offer Pay As You Will admission, which allows every family to spend time connecting, learning and exploring through play. It is projected over 115,000 visitors will visit the Museum this year; 40% will come from low income households, while another 20% will come from the military.
Michael Spock, the founding director of Boston’s Children’s Museum once said “children’s museums are about people, not things.” We could not agree more, and we continue to meet our mission by growing accessible services for the community like the Play to Learn program. Now in its sixth year, Play to Learn offers free preschools classes at 15 Pierce County locations each week, and is now serving 15,000 children and their adults each year.
And, the Museum does all of this with a modest budget and careful stewardship of the resources that community members, like you, have entrusted it with.
Please consider providing a gift to the Museum’s this holiday season. Even a modest gift will have a big impact on our ability to continue to offer high quality and accessible play experiences for our community’s children.
Thank you for your continued support of the Children’s Museum of Tacoma- a thoughtful investment in your community’s future; the Museum is grateful for your commitment.
